Going into 2015, Villa fans were a little apprehensive about the clubs future in the Premier League. The football under Paul Lambert was poor and, although lying mid-table, we were still less than six points above the relegation zone. I guess we’d all take that position now!
In the first three months of the year only the FA Cup and Lambert’s sacking gave us any joy as we went on a run of losing seven games on the trot. April was most memorable for the FA Cup semi-final and only a couple of wins in early May secured 17th place and another year in the Premier League.
The summer saw signing after signing but the departures of Benteke and Delph (wasn’t bothered about Vlaar and Cleverely) ultimately weakened the spine of the team. In the first game of the new season Villa won and have done bugger all since then.
So, as we head towards 2016, it’s very easy to slot each game played into three categories.
Albion at home (for the last minute penalty)
Albion in the FA Cup
Liverpool in the FA Cup Semi Final (scoring in a semi for the first time since 1957!)
FA Cup Final
Pretty much every other game
After such a depressing tale it’s always a good thing to leave the reader with a positive, a glimmer of hope even. Well all we can give you is that after eighteen games of the 2014/15 season Leicester City had ten points – here’s hoping!
