Well, it’s certainly been an eventful Summer for Aston Villa and as the weather starts to cool and the kids go back to school its worth looking at what has happened since May. Back then the team was awful, getting relegated from the Premier League and the Chairman, Randy Lerner, was about as popular as the bubonic plague.
Skip forward three months and we have a new owner, Dr Tony Xia, who has one of the best twitter accounts in football, a new management team led by Roberto di Matteo and nine new players. In our last blog post we asked for a new striker. Dr Xia didn’t listen to us – he signed two instead for a combined fee of more than £25m!
What’s most pleasing is the number of players we’ve churned from last year. In the transfer window that ended last week we loaned out three players and got rid permanently of so many more. Who would have thought that we would get shot of Lescott and Adama in the same window? If only Gabby had gone to Reading and Richards to West Ham it would have been perfect.
If we had kept the same team as last year, and the Luton game was a prime example, I honestly think we could have been playing in League One a year from now. Instead we go into the Forest game next Sunday with a renewed optimism. Looking at the games we have played so far it’s clear that clinical finishing would have seen us right – we now have the tools and we need to use them.
It could take a few games for the new players to gel, but it’s gonna happen. Pretty soon one team is going to concede four or five goals against us – as we did in 1987 we then just need to go on a run of 10/15 games where we win most of them. If we get there, then next spring could see us going for promotion.
