Before the season started, all Aston Villa fans will have said ‘We’ll take the current league standings and end the season now’. The joke being, that on alphabetical order, Aston Villa stood at the top of the league in the Champions position. Move forward less than a month and Aston Villa go into the home game against Norwich City bottom of the league in 24th place! Now we all know that we can joke around singing ‘The Championship is upside down’ but unfortunately that is the current reality for Aston Villa.
The home game against Hull City started with the kind of football that all Villa fans wanted to see us play, taking the game to the opposition. But by half time we had reverted to type and were playing uncomfortably, creating little, just trying not to lose. When you play like that you tend to end up doing exactly what you don’t want to do and Villa went on to lose the next two league games against Reading and Cardiff (yes you read that right, Reading and Cardiff – that is how low we have fallen).
Now the optimists amongst you will say – its only three games we’ve still got another forty-three to go. But that’s not really the point, Aston Villa have only won two out of their last ten Championship games. It is not the type of form that promotion campaigns are built on.
So where do we go from here? That’s the big question because sometimes it seems that we have been shipping more managers over the last couple of years that we have been scoring goals. It’s always easy to make a change at the top but what about all this ‘building behind the scenes’ and ‘shaping a way for all our teams to play’? Surely the master plan isn’t to try to score a goal and then hold on with Plan B being forget the goal, lets just try not to concede?
I started the season with a small piece of optimism but after the Cardiff and Reading debacles I’m rather miserable now. Let’s hope the mood has changed after the Norwich City game.
